The Cumbria Union of Golf Clubs Senior Squad is affiliated to the Cumbria Union of Golf Clubs Organisation and we work closely with that association and report to their committee on a regular basis. The Senior Squad was formed in 2001 to give senior (55 years and over) golfers with low handicaps the opportunity to play golf on a scratch basis against other low handicapped golfers from the other Northern Counties. We now have matches against Cheshire, Durham, Lancashire Northumberland and Yorkshire plus fixtures against Cumbria Juniors and Cumbria Ladies. We also enter a six man team in the Northern Counties team competition and from this competition the winning county team goes forward to the national Championship plus teams to play the Midlands and Scotland are selected.
Through the formation of the Senior Squad new friendships and acquaintances have developed and members have entered and travelled to the Northern, English, Scottish, Irish and British Championships.
The Cumbria Senior Squad is run by a committee with the Chairman and Secretary/Treasure being elected for a two year term of office and five members elected on to the committee annually.
We are always looking for low handicapped senior golfers, who enjoy a competitive but friendly tussle with like minded golfers to join us, but a warning if your handicap slips to nine at the end of the golfing year you are culled but can return if you bring your handicap back to 8.
We have formed a three man selection committee to select teams to represent The County and the policy of the association is to select the best teams available with the possibility of the higher handicapped players in the association not receiving a game against the other Counties. Due to the fact that quite often players are not available it is usual for about 20 to 24 players to represent the County during the year. We also have three internal fixtures throughout the year. At the start of the year a pairs aggregate competition then in June/July an individual medal and at the end of the season connected to our A G M a Stableford individual competition.
We hope you are interested in joining us and the only cost to you will be, when selected, will be for meals and possibly some travel costs. In 2009 we have been allocated funds to offset some of our travel expenses which will be apportioned according to miles travelled to players at the end of the season. It is hoped that players will be able to share transport when ever possible.
We welcome anyone not currently in the squad and who is interested in representing the county to get in touch with the Senior Squad Chairman,Andrew Morrison, on 01768341790 or Secretary, Alan Shaw, on 01229825003.
